ERPNext vs Odoo in India: real cost, GST and customisation compared
ERPNext and Odoo are both open source, but they cost, customise and handle Indian GST differently. Here is how to choose for an Indian SME — from a partner that implements both.
Indian business owners comparing ERP software usually end up with the same two names: ERPNext and Odoo. Both are open source, both cover accounting, inventory, sales, purchase, manufacturing and HR, and both have partners across India. The differences only show up once you look at what you will actually pay, how GST is handled, and how much the system can be changed to fit your business.
We implement both, so this is not a pitch for one. It is the comparison we walk clients through before they decide.
1. Licence cost: what "free" really means
ERPNext is fully open source. Every module — accounting, stock, manufacturing, HR, payroll, projects — is in the free version. You pay for hosting, implementation and support, not for users.
Odoo has two editions. Community is free but leaves out several apps and features; Enterprise adds them and is licensed per user per month. Many Indian businesses start on Community and find that a feature they need is Enterprise-only, which changes the budget mid-project.
Rule of thumb: if you expect many users — counters, store staff, supervisors — ERPNext's no-per-user model usually costs less over three to five years.
2. Indian GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills
Both systems can produce GST-compliant invoices with CGST, SGST and IGST, HSN codes and GSTR reports. E-invoicing (IRN and QR code) and e-way bills need an integration with a GST Suvidha Provider in both cases. ERPNext's India compliance app is open source and maintained by the community; on Odoo, Indian localisation is stronger on Enterprise.
In practice, GST works well on either once it is set up properly — the quality of the implementation matters more than the platform.
3. Customisation
ERPNext lets you add custom fields, forms (DocTypes), print formats, workflows and reports from the browser, often without writing code. Deeper changes go into a custom app in Python.
Odoo is extremely powerful to extend, but most real changes are Python modules written by a developer, and Enterprise's Studio tool costs extra.
If your process is unusual — a stone crusher weighbridge, an RMC batching plant, a jewellery scheme — ERPNext's low-code approach usually gets you there faster and cheaper.
4. Manufacturing and inventory
Both handle bills of materials, work orders, batch and serial tracking and multi-warehouse stock. Odoo's manufacturing and warehouse apps are polished, with strong barcode workflows on Enterprise. ERPNext covers the same ground in the free version and is simpler to adapt to process industries where one input becomes several outputs.
5. Ease of use
Odoo's interface is often seen as more modern; ERPNext's is more uniform — once a user learns one form, every form works the same way. For staff who will use one or two screens all day, either is fine with good training in their own language.
6. Support and partners
Both depend heavily on the implementation partner. Ask who will answer the phone after go-live, whether they have done your industry before, and whether your data and code stay yours if you change partner. With open source, they should.
Quick verdict
- Choose ERPNext if you want every module without per-user licences, expect to customise, or run a process-heavy business.
- Choose Odoo if you want a large app ecosystem, are comfortable with Enterprise licensing, and your processes are close to standard.

Frequently asked questions
Neither is better for everyone. ERPNext suits businesses that want every module without per-user licences and expect to customise; Odoo suits businesses happy with Enterprise licensing and a large app ecosystem.
Yes. ERPNext is fully open source with no per-user licence. You pay for hosting, implementation and support.
Basic GST invoicing works on Community, but stronger Indian localisation and some reports are in Enterprise. E-invoicing needs a GSP integration on either platform.
With many users, ERPNext is usually cheaper over three to five years because there is no per-user licence. With very few users, the difference is smaller.
